The Prime Minister ordered that the early prison release scheme be paused pending a review - Burnham pauses early prison release scheme - BBC News. This came about after criticism of the scheme from survivors and victims' families, including the widow of PC Andrew Harper who described the possibility of his killers' early release as "deplorable".
The new Justice Secretary Alex Norris said the pause aimed to "give victims and survivors certainty" and the government wanted to make sure it got "the implementation of this policy right".
Addressing the overcrowding is one matter but there is a need to also address the reasons why so many individuals end up in prison even for non-violent / non-sexual offences. Reasons for this include incessant demands in the media for various offenders to be "locked up" for longer. There is also political competition between political parties as to who is the toughest on crime. Parliament enacts many additional imprisonable offences each year.
The justice secretary, Alex Norris, said 5,000 prisoners would be released over 10 months from October in England and Wales, down from the government’s original plan for 6,000 from September."
