(Monday) - 21 June - Government data reported that up to 20 June there had been 127,976 deaths (within 28 days of first positive test) due to Covid-19. There were 9,284 new positive tests reported on 20 June. See also Worldometers - Coronavirus - UK .  The data also reported that 42,964,013 people had received a first dose of vaccine (and 31,340,507 a second dose) up to and including 19 June 2021.

21 June was planned to be the date that coronavirus restrictions in England would come to an end. On 14 June, the government bowed to the inevitable and announced that Covid restrictions would have to remain in place until 19 July though it was reported that "Ministers are confident" that restrictions can then end instead of ending on the hoped for 21 June - BBC News 15 June. This was due to the spread of the "Delta" Variant (or Indian variant) which got into the UK in April 2021. India was not included on the travel "red list" until 23 April.

21 June - BBC News - Government ordered to release secret pandemic planning files - (i.e. files relating to Operation Cygnus).


22 June - Government data reported that up to 21 June there had been 127,981 deaths (within 28 days of first positive test) due to Covid-19. There were 10,633 new positive tests reported on 21 June. See also Worldometers - Coronavirus - UK .  The data also reported that 43,127,763 people had received a first dose of vaccine (and 31,449,915 a second dose) up to and including 20 June 2021.

23 June - Government data reported that up to 22 June there had been 128,008 deaths (within 28 days of first positive test) due to Covid-19. There were 11,625 new positive tests reported on 22 June. See also Worldometers - Coronavirus - UK .  The data also reported that 43,148,843 people had received a first dose of vaccine (and 31,489,240 a second dose) up to and including 21 June 2021.

(A worrying set of figures. 27 deaths bringing the UK total to over 128,000 and 11,625 new positive tests).

24 June - Government data reported that up to 23 June there had been 128,027 deaths (within 28 days of first positive test) due to Covid-19. There were 16,135 new positive tests reported on 23 June. 25 June - Government data reported that up to 24 June there had been 128,048 deaths (within 28 days of first positive test) due to Covid-19. There were 16,703 new positive tests reported on 24 June. 26 June - Government data reported that up to 25 June there had been 128,066 deaths (within 28 days of first positive test) due to Covid-19. There were 15,810 new positive tests reported on 25 June. 26 June - The Health Secretary - Matt Hancock - resigned over a relationship with Gina Coladangelo. The Prime Minister expressed confidence in Hancock but the political pressure was such that resignation was inevitable - BBC News 27 June 2021.  The article comments - "Matt Hancock has resigned as health secretary after he breached social distancing guidance by kissing a colleague. In a letter to the PM he said the government "owe it to people who have sacrificed so much in this pandemic to be honest when we have let them down". Sajid Javid MP was appointed as Hancock's replacement.

27 June - Government data reported that up to 26 June there had been 128,089 deaths (within 28 days of first positive test) due to Covid-19. There were 18,270 new positive tests reported on 26 June. See also Worldometers - Coronavirus - UK .  The data also reported that 44,078,244 people had received a first dose of vaccine (and 32,244,223 a second dose) up to and including 25 June 2021.

(Monday) 28 June - Government data reported that up to 27 June there had been 128,100 deaths (within 28 days of first positive test) due to Covid-19. There were 14,876 new positive tests reported on 27 June. See also Worldometers - Coronavirus - UK .  The data also reported that 44,314,799 people had received a first dose of vaccine (and 32,460,191 a second dose) up to and including 26 June 2021.

28 June - Hansard House of Commons - Statement by Sajid Javid in which he stated that the aim was to have about two-thirds of all adults fully vaccinated by 19 July. The government had decided NOT to bring forward the date for further easing of restrictions but, Mr Javid said, "we see no reason to go beyond 19 July ..."  The Shadow Health Secretary (Jonathan Ashworth MP) offered Mr Javid a "word to the wise" regarding statements such as "no going back" and that lifting restrictions will be "irreversible."

29 June - Government data reported that up to 28 June there had been 128,103 deaths (within 28 days of first positive test) due to Covid-19. There were 22,868 new positive tests reported on 28 June. 30 June - Government data reported that up to 29 June there had been 128,126 deaths (within 28 days of first positive test) due to Covid-19. There were 20,479 new positive tests reported on 29 June. 1 July - Government data reported that up to 30 June there had been 128,126 deaths (within 28 days of first positive test) due to Covid-19. There were 20,479 new positive tests reported on 30 June. 2 July - Government data reported that up to 1 July there had been 128,162 deaths (within 28 days of first positive test) due to Covid-19. There were 27,989 new positive tests reported on 1 July. 3 July - Government data reported that up to 2 July there had been 128,189 deaths (within 28 days of first positive test) due to Covid-19. There were 27,125 new positive tests reported on 2 July. 4 July - Government data reported that up to 3 July there had been 128,207 deaths (within 28 days of first positive test) due to Covid-19. There were 24,885 new positive tests reported on 3 July. (Monday) 5 July - Government data reported that up to 4 July there had been 128,222 deaths (within 28 days of first positive test) due to Covid-19. There were 24,248 new positive tests reported on 4 July. 6 July - Government data reported that up to 5 July there had been 128,231 deaths (within 28 days of first positive test) due to Covid-19. There were 27,334 new positive tests reported on 5 July. See also Worldometers - Coronavirus - UK .  The data also reported that 45,351,719 people had received a first dose of vaccine (and 33,726,362 a second dose) up to and including 4 July 2021.

The announcement on 5 July had the look of a government throwing most of the caution to the winds and doing so in the face of rising numbers of infections. Hospitalisations have also increased together with the number of deaths within 28 days of a positive test. Even simple precautions such as face-covering requirements are to be dispensed with and the matter left to individual decision.

7 July - Government data reported that up to 6 July there had been 128,268 deaths (within 28 days of first positive test) due to Covid-19. There were 28,773 new positive tests reported on 6 July. 8 July - Government data reported that up to 7 July there had been 128,301 deaths (within 28 days of first positive test) due to Covid-19. There were 32,548 new positive tests reported on 7 July. 9 July - Government data reported that up to 8 July there had been 128,336 deaths (within 28 days of first positive test) due to Covid-19. There were 32,551 new positive tests reported on 8 July. BBC News - Heart inflammation link to Pfizer and Moderna jabs - (recall that earlier in 2021 concerns were raised over the Oxford /Astrazenca vaccine and possible blood clotting).

10 July - Government data reported that up to 9 July there had been 128,365 deaths (within 28 days of first positive test) due to Covid-19. There were 35,707 new positive tests reported on 9 July. See also Worldometers - Coronavirus - UK .  The data also reported that 45,697,875 people had received a first dose of vaccine (and 34,374,246 a second dose) up to and including 8 July 2021.

The 10 July data showed over 206,000 new positive tests over the previous 7 days. Around 500 persons per day are being hospitalised (2872 in the last 7 days).

On 7 July an important letter was published in The Lancet - Mass infection is not an option: we must do more to protect our young - where medical professionals described the government's planned strategy as "dangerous and premature" and claimed that the government was "embarking on a dangerous and unethical experiment." The article called for a pause to plans to abandon mitigations on 19 July. 

11 July - Government data reported that up to 10 July there had been 128,399 deaths (within 28 days of first positive test) due to Covid-19. There were 32,367 new positive tests reported on 10 July. 11 July - The Guardian reported that lifting Covid rules in England will overwhelm testing capacity and in a further report, The Guardian said that public alarm grows at plans for covid freedom day.

There were 31,772 new positive tests reported on 11 July. 12 July - Hansard - Statement by Health Secretary Sajid Javid MP confirming government plans to remove most covid restrictions.  [This course of action was definitely not welcomed by the medical professions].

13 July - Government data reported that up to 12 July there had been 128,431 deaths (within 28 days of first positive test) due to Covid-19. There were 34,471 new positive tests reported on 12 July. BBC News - England lockdown rules to end on 19 July, PM confirms. (Note - relevant law in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland will change at different times and in different ways).


14 July - Government data reported that up to 13 July there had been 128,481 deaths (within 28 days of first positive test) due to Covid-19. There were 36,660 new positive tests reported on 13 July. 15 July - Government data reported that up to 14 July there had been 128,530 deaths (within 28 days of first positive test) due to Covid-19. There were 42,302 new positive tests reported on 14 July. 16 July - Government data reported that up to 15 July there had been 128,593 deaths (within 28 days of first positive test) due to Covid-19. There were 48,553 new positive tests reported on 15 July. 17 July - Government data reported that up to 16 July there had been 128,642 deaths (within 28 days of first positive test) due to Covid-19. There were 51,870 new positive tests reported on 16 July. 18 July - Government data reported that up to 17 July there had been 128,683 deaths (within 28 days of first positive test) due to Covid-19. There were 54,674 new positive tests reported on 17 July. See also Worldometers - Coronavirus - UK .  The data also reported that 46,227,101 people had received a first dose of vaccine (and 35,732,297 a second dose) up to and including 16 July 2021.  


The UK is "not out of the woods yet" and people should act with caution as Covid restrictions in England end on Monday, Prof Chris Whitty has said.

England's chief medical officer warned that Covid hospitalisations were doubling every three weeks and could hit "scary numbers" in future.

Prof Whitty said the pandemic still had a "long way to run in the UK".


It would be surprising if Prof Whitty had not advised government accordingly ....
