On 12 April, the total number of UK deaths from coronavirus stood at 127,087. This was the highest in Europe.  

(Monday) 12 April - Government data reported that up to 11 April there had been 127,087 deaths (within 28 days of first positive test) due to Covid-19. There were 1730 new positive tests reported on 11 April. See also Worldometers - Coronavirus - UK .  The data also reported that 32,121,353 people had received a first dose of vaccine (and 7,466.540 a second dose) up to and including 10 April 2021

13 April - England moved from Step 1 to Step 2 on Monday 12 April. Shopping areas were busy (with minimal "social-distancing") and pubs and bars opened for outdoor service only - BBC News Covid Lockdown eases: England 'buzzing' after first night out in 97 days. It remains to be seen whether the easing of coronavirus restrictions results in a significant rise in infections. Internationally, there are serious concerns regarding Brazil and India. Brazil is included in the UK's "red list" for international travel but India is not.

13 April - Government data reported that up to 12 April there had been 127,100 deaths (within 28 days of first positive test) due to Covid-19. There were 3568 new positive tests reported on 12 April. 14 April - BBC News -  'Mix and match' UK Covid vaccine trial expanded

14 April - Government data reported that up to 13 April there had been 127,123 deaths (within 28 days of first positive test) due to Covid-19. There were 2472 new positive tests reported on 13 April. 15 April - Government data reported that up to 14 April there had been 127,161 deaths (within 28 days of first positive test) due to Covid-19. There were 2491 new positive tests reported on 14 April. 16 April - Government data reported that up to 15 April there had been 127,191 deaths (within 28 days of first positive test) due to Covid-19. There were 2672 new positive tests reported on 15 April. 17 April - Government data reported that up to 16 April there had been 127,225 deaths (within 28 days of first positive test) due to Covid-19. There were 2596 new positive tests reported on 16 April. 18 April - Government data reported that up to 17 April there had been 127,260 deaths (within 28 days of first positive test) due to Covid-19. There were 2206 new positive tests reported on 17 April. (Monday) 19 April - Deaths due to Covid-19 have exceeded 3 million (Channel 4 News).

19 April - The Guardian - The world needs a patent waiver on Covid vaccines. Why is the UK blocking it?

19 April - international travel to/from UK continues. Accoding to the National Air Traffic Services website, aircraft movements are at 23% of the 2019 level. A number of countries are on the UK government's "Red List" but there is serious concern that India is not included - Sky News Mounting calls for India to be put on travel 'red list' amid variant fears.

20 April - India to be on Red List for travel but from Friday 23 April - Sky News.

20 April - Government data reported that up to 19 April there had been 127,274 deaths (within 28 days of first positive test) due to Covid-19. There were 2963 new positive tests reported on 19 April. 21 April - Government data reported that up to 20 April there had been 127,307 deaths (within 28 days of first positive test) due to Covid-19. There were 2524 new positive tests reported on 20 April. 21 April - The Guardian - UK in drive to develop drugs to take at home to 'stop Covid in its tracks'

21 April - The Guardian - Some Police Forces in England and Wales did not follow Covid rules, say inspectors - the article refers to an Inspection report issued on 20 April by HMICFRS.  "Based on an inspection of policing between March and November 2020, Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire & Rescue Services (HMICFRS) said that although there were some inconsistencies, in general police forces took immediate and decisive action to respond to the extreme circumstances of the pandemic."

22 April - Government data reported that up to 21 April there had been 127,327 deaths (within 28 days of first positive test) due to Covid-19. There were 2396 new positive tests reported on 21 April. 22 April - BBC News - Heathrow refuses to allow extra flights from India

23 April - Government data reported that up to 22 April there had been 127,345 deaths (within 28 days of first positive test) due to Covid-19. There were 2729 new positive tests reported on 22 April. 24 April - Government data reported that up to 23 April there had been 127,385 deaths (within 28 days of first positive test) due to Covid-19. There were 2678 new positive tests reported on 23 April. 25 April - Government data reported that up to 24 April there had been 127,417 deaths (within 28 days of first positive test) due to Covid-19. There were 2061 new positive tests reported on 24 April. (Monday) 26 April - Government data reported that up to 25 April there had been 127,428 deaths (within 28 days of first positive test) due to Covid-19. There were 1712 new positive tests reported on 25 April. 26 April - BBC News - EU sues Astrazeneca over vaccine delivery delays

27 April - Government data reported that up to 26 April there had been 127,434 deaths (within 28 days of first positive test) due to Covid-19. There were 2064 new positive tests reported on 26 April. 28 April - Government data reported that up to 27 April there had been 127,451 deaths (within 28 days of first positive test) due to Covid-19. There were 2685 new positive tests reported on 27 April. 29 April - Government data reported that up to 28 April there had been 127,480 deaths (within 28 days of first positive test) due to Covid-19. There were 2166 new positive tests reported on 28 April. 30 April - Government data reported that up to 29 April there had been 127,502 deaths (within 28 days of first positive test) due to Covid-19. There were 2445 new positive tests reported on 29 April. 1 May -  Government data reported that up to 30 April there had been 127,517 deaths (within 28 days of first positive test) due to Covid-19. There were 2381 new positive tests reported on 30 April. 2 May -  Government data reported that up to 1 May there had been 127,524 deaths (within 28 days of first positive test) due to Covid-19. There were 1907 new positive tests reported on 1 May. (Monday) 3 May (Bank Holiday) -  Government data reported that up to 2 May there had been 127,538 deaths (within 28 days of first positive test) due to Covid-19. There were 1671 new positive tests reported on 2 May. BBC News 10 May - Zero Covid deaths for England, Scotland and NI - Zero coronavirus deaths have been announced in England, Scotland and Northern Ireland on Monday. Wales recorded four deaths, meaning that, overall, the UK showed a slight increase on the two deaths recorded on Sunday.

12 May -  Government data reported that up to 11 May there had been 127,629 deaths (within 28 days of first positive test) due to Covid-19. There were 2474 new positive tests reported on 11 May. See also Worldometers - Coronavirus - UK .  The data also reported that 35,587,348 people had received a first dose of vaccine (and 18,088,385 a second dose) up to and including 10 May 2021.

The number of new positive tests for the period 5 May to 11 May is an increase on the previous 7 day period (28 April to 4 May). 

There is also increased concern about the "Indian variant" which was first detected in the UK around 16 April. Indian was not "red-listed" until 23 April. The concern is set out in The Guardian 12 May 2021 - Indian Covid variant calls into question 17 May reopening in UK, say experts.

12 May - BBC News - Will UK vaccine success keep virus at bay? - "Next week will see the most significant lifting of restrictions yet in England, with indoor mixing to be allowed. The rest of the UK is making similar steps. It means the onus is increasingly shifting on to the vaccines, rather than social distancing and restrictions, to keep the virus at bay. How well do they work? And is there now enough immunity in the population to protect us all?"

14 May - Government data reported that up to 13 May there had been 127,651 deaths (within 28 days of first positive test) due to Covid-19. There were 2657 new positive tests reported on 13 May. 16 May - On 15 May the legislation was made enabling the whole of England to move to Step 3 with effect from 17 May - see this post of 15 May. (Given the India variant this appears questionable. The Prime Minister has warned that the next date for relaxing the restrictions - 21 June - could be at risk).
