Bill of Rights Bill will not proceed

The Secretary of State for Justice (Mr Alex Chalk KC MP) informed MPs that the Bill of Rights Bill will not proceed further. Here is the extract from Hansard. Chalk's response speaks for itself  .....

Notes:

An Independent Panel on the Human Rights Act was set up by Raab and reported in December 2021 - The Independent Human Rights Act Review 2021 (publishing.service.gov.uk). The report made some recommendations but did not find major problems with the Human Rights framework.

The Bill of Rights appeared in June 2022 - Bill of Rights: Bill documents - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk). The Bill was preceded by a consultation but the many responses were not published by the government. Some responding bodies published their individual responses. The published Bill showed little to no evidence that any serious notice had been taken of responses critical of government plans for reform.

The Bill, essentially the brainchild of Dominic Raab MP, received excoriating criticism from lawyers - Law and Lawyers: Reaction to the proposed Bill of Rights (obiterj.blogspot.com)

Introduced to the House of Commons in June 2022, the Bill made no progress and Parliamentary time was allocated to other business.
