The data also reported that 42,964,013 people had received a first dose of vaccine (and 31,340,507 a second dose) up to and including 19 June 2021.
21 June was planned to be the date that coronavirus restrictions in England would come to an end. On 14 June, the government bowed to the inevitable and announced that Covid restrictions would have to remain in place until 19 July though it was reported that "Ministers are confident" that restrictions can then end instead of ending on the hoped for 21 June - BBC News 15 June. This was due to the spread of the "Delta" Variant (or Indian variant) which got into the UK in April 2021. India was not included on the travel "red list" until 23 April.

26 June - The Health Secretary - Matt Hancock - resigned over a relationship with Gina Coladangelo. The Prime Minister expressed confidence in Hancock but the political pressure was such that resignation was inevitable - BBC News 27 June 2021. The article comments - "Matt Hancock has resigned as health secretary after he breached social distancing guidance by kissing a colleague. In
a letter to the PM he said the government "owe it to people who have
sacrificed so much in this pandemic to be honest when we have let them
down". Sajid Javid MP was appointed as Hancock's replacement.

28 June - Hansard House of Commons - Statement by Sajid Javid in which he stated that the aim was to have about two-thirds of all adults fully vaccinated by 19 July. The government had decided NOT to bring forward the date for further easing of restrictions but, Mr Javid said, "we see no reason to go beyond 19 July ..." The Shadow Health Secretary (Jonathan Ashworth MP) offered Mr Javid a "word to the wise" regarding statements such as "no going back" and that lifting restrictions will be "irreversible."

The announcement on 5 July had the look of a government throwing most of the caution to the winds and doing so in the face of rising numbers of infections. Hospitalisations have also increased together with the number of deaths within 28 days of a positive test. Even simple precautions such as face-covering requirements are to be dispensed with and the matter left to individual decision.

The 10 July data showed over 206,000 new positive tests over the previous 7 days. Around 500 persons per day are being hospitalised (2872 in the last 7 days).
On 7 July an important letter was published in The Lancet - Mass infection is not an option: we must do more to protect our young - where medical professionals described the government's planned strategy as "dangerous and premature" and claimed that the government was "embarking on a dangerous and unethical experiment." The article called for a pause to plans to abandon mitigations on 19 July.

18 July - BBC News - Covid hospital numbers could get scary - Prof Chris Whitty
- The UK is "not out of the woods yet" and people should act with caution as Covid restrictions in England end on Monday, Prof Chris Whitty has said.
England's chief medical officer warned that Covid hospitalisations were doubling every three weeks and could hit "scary numbers" in future.
Prof Whitty said the pandemic still had a "long way to run in the UK".
It would be surprising if Prof Whitty had not advised government accordingly ....
